The District Court in Spišská Nová Ves rules in favour of a Roma woman who was seeking a redress for discrimination faced in 2010, when she applied for a job as a field social worker in town Spišská Nová Ves.

The District court delivered The Center for Civil and Human Rights (Poradna) as a plaintiff in a case a written judgement in an actio popularis lawsuit filed against the State represented by Ministry of Education and the city of Stara Lubovna for segregation of Roma children at the primary school in Stara Lubovna – Podsadek in Eastern Slovakia. The court dismissed the lawsuit at a hearing on 6 October 2016 and in the delivered judgment reasoned its decision. The decision is not final as Poradna filed an appeal.

The charges have been brought against a police officer who led a police raid against Roma in a village Vrbnica in Eastern Slovakia. Simultaneously the investigator from the Ministry of Interior´s Inspection interrupted the criminal investigation held in a case of police ill-treatment against Roma by certain police officers on the spot. The investigator reasoned his decision to interrupt the investigation in this part by the lack of sufficient evidence against police officers who allegedly used physical violence against Roma.

The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) adopted its View in a case of discrimination of woman from Slovakia. The affected woman claimed to be discriminated against based on her gender and marital and family status once she had been dismissed from her work place.

Together with partner non-governmental organizations Center for Reproductive Rights, Citizen, Democracy and Accountability and Women`s Circles we submitted the UN Human Rights Committee (HRC) a joint alternative report, which describes shortcomings in implementation of International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in Slovakia specifically in the area of the protection of women`s reproductive rights.
