Press release: The District Court again acquits police officers accused of abusing Roma boys at a police station in Košice

At the hearing on 4 December 2019 the Košice II District Court again acquitted the police officers accused of abusing Roma boys at a police station in Košice in March 2009. According to the court, neither the additional evidence proved that the incident took place as alleged by the indictment of the prosecution.

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (the Committee) calls on the Slovak Government to take effective measures to eliminate discrimination against Roma in various areas of public life. This follows from concluding observations the Committee released after the November session and constructive dialogue held with the Slovak government delegation in Geneva.

We submitted an alternative report to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), which describes selected shortcomings in the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination by the Slovak Government. In our report we particularly deal with the implementation of the Convention in respect to Roma minority in Slovakia.

Decision of the European court of human rights in the case of Adam v. Slovakia

The European Court of Human Rights in July 2016 delivered a judgement in a case Adam v. Slovakia concerning police violence against Roma teenager that occurred in 2010 at one of the police stations in eastern Slovakia. It ruled that Slovak authorities had failed to adequately investigate the alleged violence.

During its hearing on 17 May 2017 the District Court Košice II repeatedly acquitted police officers accused of abusing Roma boys at a police station in Košice. According to the court, neither the additional investigation proved that the act took place as alleged by the prosecution. The prosecutor has appealed the verdict.

Press release: The criminal charges have been brought in a case of police raid in a Roma settlement in Vrbnica

The charges have been brought against a police officer who led a police raid against Roma in a village Vrbnica in Eastern Slovakia. Simultaneously the investigator from the Ministry of Interior´s Inspection interrupted the criminal investigation held in a case of police ill-treatment against Roma by certain police officers on the spot. The investigator reasoned his decision to interrupt the investigation in this part by the lack of sufficient evidence against police officers who allegedly used physical violence against Roma.

Supplementary written comments to the UN Human Rights Committee submitted jointly with partner NGOs

Together with partner non-governmental organizations Center for Reproductive Rights, Citizen, Democracy and Accountability and Women`s Circles we submitted the UN Human Rights Committee (HRC) a joint alternative report, which describes shortcomings in implementation of International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in Slovakia specifically in the area of the protection of women`s reproductive rights.
