The appeal court rules that Roma children from the town Stará Ľubovňa are not segregated in education

Roma children from a primary school in Stará Ľubovňa (town district Podsadek) in Eastern Slovakia are not segregated in education despite the fact that the school is ethnically homogenous and attended only by Roma children from the nearby marginalised community. The Regional Court in Bratislava as an appeal court has confirmed it by its judgment and upheld a decision of first instance court from October 2016. The court proceeding was initiated by our NGO.

15-year journey to justice: The Appeal Court confirms financial compensation for an illegally sterilized Roma woman in Slovakia

The Regional Court in Košice as an appeal court confirmed compensation for an illegally sterilized Roma woman in the full claimed amount of over EUR 16,000. The injured woman was sterilized without informed consent in 1999 in Krompachy hospital in Eastern Slovakia. She has been claiming justice in domestic courts for 15 years. Responsibility must therefore be assumed by the Slovak government to ensure access to justice for all survivors of this practice.

The European Court in Strasbourg: Slovakia has seriously failed to investigate police violence against a Roma boy

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg (ECtHR) ruled today in the case of police violence against a Roma boy, which was due in 2015 in one of the Roma marginalised communities in Eastern Slovakia municipalities in the district of Spisska Nova Ves. According to the ECtHR, the responsible state authorities have not sufficiently investigated the case, in breach of their international human rights obligations. The ECHR awarded the victim a compensation of EUR 5000.

On 25 November 2019, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the President of the Slovak Republic Zuzana Čaputová received representatives of women's non-governmental organizations that have long been devoted to the issue of violence against women. The District Court again acquits police officers accused of abusing Roma boys at a police station in Košice

At today's hearing, the Košice II District Court again - for the third time - acquitted the police officers accused of abusing Roma boys at a police station in Košice in March 2009. According to the court, neither the additional evidence proved that the incident took place as alleged by the indictment of the prosecution.

EUROPEAN COMMISSION PUBLISHED A REPORT ON IMPLEMENTATION OF ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LEGISLATION IN SLOVAKIA

The European Commission published a report that provides a detailed insight into the implementation of anti-discrimination legislation, including the Anti-Discrimination Act in Slovakia in 2018. Our cooperating lawyer, Vanda Durbakova, also participated in the preparation of this report in cooperation with the European Network of Legal Experts on Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination.
