Discrimination must be sanctioned: The Slovak court ordered a bar owner to pay compensation for discrimination

Yesterday, the Regional Court in Košice, Slovakia, has decided a case of Roma customers who faced discrimination based on their ethnic origin in a local bar in a small town Spišské Vlachy in Eastern Slovakia. The court ordered a bar owner to pay the discriminated Roma a financial compensation in amount of 300 Eur each and pay legal costs.

UN CRC calls on the Slovak government to comply with its human rights obligations on children’s rights

The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) together with the Center for Civil and Human Rights (Poradňa pre občianske a ľudské práva) welcome the Concluding Observations of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC) issued recently after its session on Slovakia. The report urges the Government of the Slovak Republic to take steps towards proper fulfilment of children’s rights in Slovakia. The Committee draws special attention to the long-term violations of the rights of Romani children, earlier highlighted by the ERRC and Poradňa in their alternative report to the UN CRC.

On 14 June 2016 a court proceeding continued against the state represented by the Ministry of Education and the city of Stará Ľubovňa for segregation of Roma children at the primary school in Stará Ľubovňa - Podsadek. During the recent court hearing the court heard a witness - a local inhabitant from the majority population, who stressed the importance of integration of Roma children with children from the majority in schools in the city.

The District Court Košice II has decided that the Pasteur University Hospital in Košice, Slovakia, violated the rights of a Romani woman whom they sterilized without securing her informed consent.
