The UN has recommended to compensate a discriminated woman, but the Slovak government refuses to do so

The government of the Slovak Republic refuses to compensate the woman whose human rights violation was decided in November 2016 by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). According to the affected woman's lawyer, the Slovak government has grossly ignored its international legal obligations in the field of human rights.

On 4 September 2017 the Country report 2016 on Slovakia on implementation of domestic anti-discrimination legislation was published. Our colleague Vanda Durbakova as an expert on non-discrimination law at the European network of legal experts in gender equality and non-discrimination participated on the preparation of this report.

Roma women activists whom we cooperate with for a long time jointly met up again to follow up their work on a campaign that would raise a long-standing problem of Roma women who were forcibly sterilised in the past and were still not given an apology and compensation from the Slovak government.

We submitted the report to the UN Committee against Torture, in which we are infoming about selected shortcomings in the implementation of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment in Slovakia.

Responses from the ministries to the petitions of Roma women activists

At the beginning of June 2017, we received a response from the Ministry of Health to the petition initiated by Roma women activists from Jarovnice by which they pointed out  the humiliation and segregation of Roma women at the maternity ward at the Prešov hospital. Early in May 2017, we also received a response from the Ministry of Education to the petition initiated by Roma women activists from Hermanovce to highlight discrimination against Roma children at a local elementary school.

The Slovak Court awards compensation to another forcibly sterilised Roma woman

Following a hearing on 26 May 2017, the District Court in Spišská Nová Ves awarded financial compensation of €16,000 to a forcibly sterilised Roma woman. The verdict is not final.
