How we celebrated the International Roma Day

On 8 April 2017, on the International Roma Day we met in a village Jarovnice with Roma women from different localities in Eastern Slovakia. On this day Roma all around the world celebrate their culture and traditions by singing and dancing. As well, they recall human rights violations that also many Roma women in the world still face.

A woman who achieved justice before the CEDAW still awaits compensation from the Slovak Government

In November 2016 the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) decided in favour of a Slovak woman who successfully claimed to be discriminated against on the grounds of gender, marital and family status. The CEDAW decided that the domestic courts had failed to sufficiently protect the claimant from being discriminated against, and recommended the Slovak Government to provide her with adequate compensation. Unfortunately, the Slovak Government is yet to fulfil the recommendation, even though it is obliged to inform the CEDAW in the upcoming weeks on the measures it adopted in regards to the decision.

Slovak Court rules in favor of a Roma woman facing discrimination while applying for a job as a field social worker

The District Court in Spišská Nová Ves rules in favour of a Roma woman who was seeking a redress for discrimination faced in 2010, when she applied for a job as a field social worker in town Spišská Nová Ves. According to the Court town Spišská Nová Ves must apologize and compensate her financially. This is one of the first decisions issued by the domestic courts concerning racial discrimination in access to employment in favour of discriminated person.

On 25 February 2017 Roma women activists from Eastern Slovakia met on yet another meeting to support their activism, which we organized in Kosice and invited Jana Belisová, who works as an ethnomusicologist at the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

Our colleague Vanda Durbáková became a member of the European network of legal experts in gender equality and non-discrimination.

The courts` decision in a case of school segregation of Roma children in Stara Lubovna violates the international law

The District court delivered us a written judgement in an actio popularis lawsuit filed against the State represented by Ministry of Education and the city of Stara Lubovna for segregation of Roma children at the primary school in Stara Lubovna – Podsadek in Eastern Slovakia. The court dismissed the lawsuit at a hearing on 6 October 2016 and in the delivered judgment reasoned its decision. The decision is not final as we filed an appeal.
