The European Court in Strasbourg: Slovakia has seriously failed to investigate police violence against a Roma boy

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg (ECtHR) ruled today in the case of police violence against a Roma boy, which was due in 2015 in one of the Roma marginalised communities in Eastern Slovakia municipalities in the district of Spisska Nova Ves. According to the ECtHR, the responsible state authorities have not sufficiently investigated the case, in breach of their international human rights obligations. The ECHR awarded the victim a compensation of EUR 5000.

The District Court again acquits police officers accused of abusing Roma boys at a police station in Košice

At today's hearing, the Košice II District Court again - for the third time - acquitted the police officers accused of abusing Roma boys at a police station in Košice in March 2009. According to the court, neither the additional evidence proved that the incident took place as alleged by the indictment of the prosecution.

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination calls on the Slovak Government to take effective measures to eliminate discrimination against Roma in various areas of public life. This follows from concluding observations the Committee released after the November session and constructive dialogue held with the Slovak government delegation in Geneva.

During its hearing on 17 May 2017 the District Court Košice II repeatedly acquitted police officers accused of abusing Roma boys at a police station in Košice. According to the court, neither the additional investigation proved that the act took place as alleged by the prosecution. The prosecutor has appealed the verdict.
