15-year journey to justice: The Appeal Court confirms financial compensation for an illegally sterilized Roma woman in Slovakia

The Regional Court in Košice as an appeal court confirmed compensation for an illegally sterilized Roma woman in the full claimed amount of over EUR 16,000. The injured woman was sterilized without informed consent in 1999 in Krompachy hospital in Eastern Slovakia. She has been claiming justice in domestic courts for 15 years. Responsibility must therefore be assumed by the Slovak government to ensure access to justice for all survivors of this practice.

On 25 November 2019, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the President of the Slovak Republic Zuzana Čaputová received representatives of women's non-governmental organizations that have long been devoted to the issue of violence against women. UN Committee calls upon the Slovak government for more consistent protection of economic and social rights of people in Slovakia

The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights called upon the Slovak government to adopt multiple specific measures to improve the production of human rights in Slovakia. It published the proposed measures after its October session and discussion with Slovak government delegation in Geneva. Many of them concern protection of Roma minority rights specifically.

On 5 - 6 June 2019, together with Roma woman activist Veronika from Jarovnice, we attended a meeting of representatives of Roma women's NGOs in Brussels. The meeting was organized by the Center for Reproductive Rights following the meeting of the previous year in Zagreb.

At a meeting with Roma women in Prešov, on 29 May 2019 we worked on complaints addressed to the Public Defender of Rights. Some of the Roma women decided to contact her after they had the opportunity to get acquainted with the activities of her office during a personal meeting in March 2019.

On April 30, 2019, we organized a one-day networking meeting in Prešov. The aim of the meeting was to create space for contact and mutual discussion of Roma women and representatives of women's and Roma NGOs dedicated to the protection of women's reproductive rights or activities aimed at supporting Roma women.
